RESUMO

In this study, a multi-functional packaging film was fabricated, utilizing the natural polysaccharide chitosan (CS) as the base material, integrating natural blueberry anthocyanin (AN) as pH-responsive indicator, and reinforced with cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs). The implications of addition levels of CNCs on the characteristics of the films were systematically investigated, resulting in that CS-AN-CNCs 9 % film exhibited optimal performance. Specifically, the film showed a substantial enhancement in maximum tensile strength from 15 MPa to 35 MPa; On the other hand, the swelling degree properties, the oxygen permeability and water vapor permeability decreased from 159.2 % to 92.0 %, from 51.7 g/(m2d) to 12.2 g/(m2d), from 31.6 × 10-12 g/(m·s·Pa) to 1.6 × 10-12 g/(m·s·Pa), respectively. Moreover, the CS-AN-CNCs 9 % film exhibited antioxidant, antibacterial, coupled with a color metrically responsive to pH variations, displaying great potential in indicating the shrimp freshness and delaying spoilage. Another notable advantage of the-prepared packaging material lies in its completely biodegradability, therefore meeting the requirement of environmental protection. Therefore, the prepared CS-AN-CNCs film as an intelligent packaging solution with potential applications in food preservation and freshness monitoring applications.

BACKGROUND: Extramedullary plasmacytoma (EMP) is a rare plasma cell malignancy, especially when the tumor originates in skeletal muscle. Plasmablastic plasmacytoma is an anaplastic round cell tumor with highly malignancy and poor prognosis. To date, there have been no reports on the transformation of skeletal muscle EMP into plasmablastic plasmacytoma. Therefore, the diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis of cases of this pathologic transformation are unclear. CASE PRESENTATION: This article reports a case of an elderly male patient who presented with a painless mass in the right calf and was diagnosed with EMP by puncture pathology. Complete remission was obtained after sequential chemoradiotherapy. 6 months later, another puncture was performed due to plasmablastic plasmacytoma multiple distant metastases, and the pathology showed that EMP was transformed to plasmablastic plasmacytoma. Despite aggressive antitumor therapy, the disease continued to deteriorate, and the patient ultimately died of respiratory failure. CONCLUSION: The transformation of EMP into plasmablastic plasmacytoma is very rare, and its diagnosis and treatment require the participation of both experienced pathologists and clinicians. We report this case in order to raise clinicians' awareness of the diagnosis and treatment of EMP and its transformation to plasmablastic plasmacytoma, and to avoid misdiagnosis and underdiagnosis.

Statins are lipid-lowering agents that have also been found to have anticancer effects. The relationship between statin use and clinical outcomes in ovarian cancer (OC) remains controversial, as previous assessments of the relationship between statin use and OC prognosis have yielded inconsistent results. Therefore, a comprehensive meta-analysis was performed in the present study to investigate this association. Studies were systematically retrieved by searching the PubMed, Embase and Cochrane Library databases, and consulting reference lists of the related studies. The search timeframe was from database creation to September 1, 2022. Pooled hazard ratios (HRs) with corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated to assess the association. In the present meta-analysis, 16 studies with 37,660 patients with OC were included, of which 11,296 patients had been prescribed statins. The results showed that statin use markedly improved the overall survival time (OS; HR, 0.79; 95% CI, 0.73-0.85; P<0.00001) and OC-specific survival time (HR, 0.84; 95% CI, 0.80-0.89; P<0.00001), especially the OS time in patients with serous OC (HR, 0.81; 95% CI, 0.74-0.89; P<0.0001) and endometrioid OC (HR, 0.80; 95% CI, 0.66-0.98; P=0.03). In addition, survival rate was higher in patients who used statins after OC diagnosis (HR, 0.79; 95% CI, 0.73-0.85; P<0.00001). However, there was no statistically significant association between statin use and the prognosis of mucinous and clear cell OC. The results suggested that statin use markedly improved the OS in patients with OC, including in those with serous and endometrioid OC. Statins were also found to improve the prognosis of patients of both Asian and non-Asian ethnicities. In addition, both lipophilic and hydrophilic statins improved the survival in patients with OC, especially in patients using statins after OC diagnosis. However, the effect may vary depending on the statin type, duration of use and cancer type, and more well-designed studies are needed to further evaluate this.

To investigate the predictive value of neuron-specific enolase (NSE) on intensive care unit (ICU) mortality in patients with septic shock. Seventy-five patients with septic shock hospitalized in the emergency intensive care unit (EICU) of Hebei General Hospital from March 2020 to September 2021 were included, and the patients' baseline characteristics and laboratory findings were collected. NSE levels on the first and fourth days after admission were retrieved. NSE% [(NSEday1 - NSEday4)/NSEday1 × 100%] and δNSE (NSEday1 - NSEday4) were calculated. The outcome indicator was ICU mortality. The patients were divided into the survivors group (n = 57) and the nonsurvivors group (n = 18). Multivariate analysis was performed to assess the relationship between NSE and ICU mortality. The predictive value of NSE was evaluated using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve. There were no significant differences in age, gender, systolic blood pressure (SBP), heart rate (HR), acute physiology and chronic health evaluation II score (APACHE II score), source of infection, and comorbidities between the 2 groups (all P > .05). Interleukin-6 (IL-6), NSE (day1), and NSE (day4) were significantly higher in patients in the nonsurvivors group (all P < .05), and there were no statistical differences in other laboratory tests between the 2 groups (all P > .05). APACHE II score, IL-6, lactate (Lac), total bilirubin (TBil), NSE (day1), and NSE (day4) showed a weak positive correlation with ICU mortality in patients with septic shock (all P < .05). Multivariate logistic regression analysis demonstrated that APACHE II score (odds ratio [OR] = 1.166, 95% confidence interval [95% confidence interval [CI]] 1.005-1.352, P = .042), IL-6 (OR = 1.001, 95% CI 1.000-1.001, P = .003) and NSE (day4) (OR = 1.099, 95% CI 1.027-1.176, P = .006) were independently associated with the ICU mortality of sepsis shock patients. The area under the curve (AUCs) of APACHE II score, IL-6, NSE (day1), and NSE (day4) for predicting prognosis were 0.650, 0.694, 0.758 and 0.770, respectively (all P < .05). NSE(day4) displayed good sensitivity and specificity (Sn = 61.11%, Sp = 91.23%) for predicting ICU mortality with a cutoff value of 25.94 ug/L. High-level NSE (day4) is an independent predictor of ICU mortality in sepsis shock patients, which may become a good alternate option for evaluating sepsis severity. More extensive studies are needed in the future to demonstrate the prognosis value of NSE.

Background: The routine clinical nutritional and inflammatory indicators such as serum albumin, total cholesterol and lymphocytes have been widely investigated in the prognosis of small cell lung cancer (SCLC). The Naples prognostic score (NPS), based on nutritional and inflammatory status, has been identified as a prognostic impactor in several malignancies. However, the prognostic role of NPS in SCLC has not been elucidated. This study aims to evaluate the prognostic effect of NPS in SCLC patients. Patients and Methods: Patients with SCLC were recruited at Hebei General Hospital between April 2015 and August 2021. Pretreatment clinical and laboratory data were obtained. Participants were assigned into three groups according to NPS (group 0: NPS=0, group 1: NPS=1 or 2, group 2: NPS=3 or 4). Kaplan-Meier and Cox regression analysis were performed to assess the prognostic significance of NPS. The RMS package in R software was used to draw the nomogram predictive model. Results: A total of 128 patients were enrolled. The median progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) was 7.2 and 12.3 months, respectively. The median PFS and OS was 12.3 vs 19.8 months, 7.6 vs 14.1 months and 6.0 vs 8.45 months for the three groups respectively. There were significant differences in both OS and FPS among the three groups. Survival analysis showed that NPS was significantly correlated with both OS and PFS (P<0.05). Lower NPS is associated with longer OS and PFS. Multivariate analysis showed that NPS has an independent prognostic impact on OS (P<0.05). The nomogram predictive model showed that NPS has good predictive power for survival rates. Conclusion: NPS is an independent prognostic factor for OS in SCLC patients. Low NPS may predict longer OS. Therefore NPS plays a vital role in the nomogram predictive model of survival rates in SCLC patients.

To date, various studies have found that the occurrence of cancer may be related to viral infections. Therefore, it is important to explore the relationship between viruses and diseases. The International Agency for Research on Cancer has defined six types of viruses as Class 1 human carcinogens, including Epstein-Barr virus, hepatitis C virus, hepatitis B virus, human T-cell lymphotropic virus, human herpesvirus 8 and human papillomavirus, while Merkel cell polyomavirus is classified as 'probably carcinogenic to humans' (Group 2A). Therefore, in-depth research on these viruses will help clarify their relationship with diseases, and substantial efforts have been made to sequence their genomes. However, there is no complete database documenting these cancer-associated viruses, and researchers are not able to easily access and retrieve the published genomes. In this study, we developed iCAV, a database that integrates the genomes of cancer-related viruses and the corresponding phenotypes. We collected a total of 18 649 genome sequences from seven human disease-related viruses, and each virus was further classified by the associated disease, sample and country. iCAV is a comprehensive resource of cancer-associated viruses that provides browse and download functions for viral genomes. The plant primary cell wall is comprised of pectin, cellulose and hemicelluloses, whose dynamic interactions play essential roles in plant cell elongation. Through a chemical genetics screening, we identified a small molecule, named cell wall modulator (CWM), which disrupted cell growth and deformed cell shape in etiolated Arabidopsis hypocotyl. A pectin defective mutant qua2, identified from screening an Arabidopsis EMS mutant library, showed a reduced sensitivity to CWM treatment. On the other hand, pectinase treatment suppressed the CWM induced phenotype. Furthermore, cellulose content was decreased in response to CWM treatment, while the cellulose synthesis mutants ixr1 and ixr2 were hypersensitive to CWM. Together, the study identified a small molecule CWM that induced a modification of the cell wall in elongating cells, likely through interfering with pectin modification. This molecule may be used as a tool to study cell wall remodeling during plant growth.

Lignin is a main component of the secondary cell wall in vessels and fibers of xylem tissue. However, the significance of lignin in cell physiology during plant growth is unclear. In this study, we generated lignin-modified Populus via cell-specific downregulation of the 4-coumarate-CoA ligase gene (4CL). The transgenic plants with selective lignin modification in vessel elements or fiber cells allowed us to investigate how lignin affects the physiology of vessel or fiber cells in relation to plant growth. Results showed that vessel-specific suppression of lignin biosynthesis resulted in deformed vessels and normal fibers, while fiber-specific suppression of lignin biosynthesis led to less-lignified fibers and normal vessels. Further analyses revealed that the efficiency of long distance water transport was severely affected in transgenics with vessel-specific lignin modification, while minimal effect was detected in transgenics with fiber-specific lignin modification. Vessel-specific lignin reduction led to high susceptibility to drought stress and poor growth in field, likely due to vessel defects in long distance transport of water. The distinct physiological significance of lignin in different cell types provides insights into the selective modification of lignin for improvement of lignocellulosic biomass utilization.

Lignin is a major component of cell wall biomass and decisively affects biomass utilisation. Engineering of lignin biosynthesis is extensively studied, while lignin modification often causes growth defects. We developed a strategy for cell-type-specific modification of lignin to achieve improvements in cell wall property without growth penalty. We targeted a lignin-related transcription factor, LTF1, for modification of lignin biosynthesis. LTF1 can be engineered to a nonphosphorylation form which is introduced into Populus under the control of either a vessel-specific or fibre-specific promoter. The transgenics with lignin suppression in vessels showed severe dwarfism and thin-walled vessels, while the transgenics with lignin suppression in fibres displayed vigorous growth with normal vessels under phytotron, glasshouse and field conditions. In-depth lignin structural analyses revealed that such cell-type-specific downregulation of lignin biosynthesis led to the alteration of overall lignin composition in xylem tissues reflecting the population of distinctive lignin polymers produced in vessel and fibre cells. This study demonstrates that fibre-specific suppression of lignin biosynthesis resulted in the improvement of wood biomass quality and saccharification efficiency and presents an effective strategy to precisely regulate lignin biosynthesis with desired growth performance.

In trees, lateral growth of the stem occurs through cell divisions in the vascular cambium. Vascular cambium activity is regulated by endogenous developmental programmes and environmental cues. However, the underlying mechanisms that regulate cambium activity are largely unknown. Genomic, biochemical and genetic approaches were used here to elucidate the role of PtrCLE20, a CLAVATA3 (CLV3)/embryo surrounding region (ESR)-related peptide gene, in the regulation of lateral growth in Populus. Fifty-two peptides encoded by CLE genes were identified in the genome of Populus trichocarpa. Among them PtrCLE20 transcripts were detected in developing xylem while the PtrCLE20 peptide was mainly localized in vascular cambium cells. PtrCLE20 acted in repressing vascular cambium activity indicated by that upregulation of PtrCLE20 resulted in fewer layers of vascular cambium cells with repressed expression of the genes related to cell dividing activity. PtrCLE20 peptide also showed a repression effect on the root growth of Populus and Arabidopsis, likely through inhibiting meristematic cell dividing activity. Together, the results suggest that PtrCLE20 peptide, produced from developing xylem cells, plays a role in regulating lateral growth by repression of cambium activity in trees.

The object of the present study is the synthetic jadeite jade produced by American General Electric Corporation. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and Laser Raman spectroscopy were used to test its spectral properties in order to examine the feature of this kind of synthetic jadeite jade by vibrational spectroscopy and to figure out the mark for discriminate synthetic jadeite jade from natural jadeite jade. The study shows that GE synthetic jadeite jade is identical with natural jadeite jade in the main on fingerprint region in FTIR; There are clearly differences in the 2 000 -4 000 cm(-1) functional region in FTIR: a group of frequencies at 3 375, 3 471 and 3 614 cm(-1) indicate vibration absorption of O-H. GE synthetic jadeite jade has proven consistent with natural jadeite jade in the laser Raman spectra by a group of sharp scattering peaks at 376, 700, 989 and 1 039 cm(-1). In addition these scattering peaks show an intact crystal shape. The FTIR peaks and Raman spectral peaks shift to higher frequencies showing GE synthetic jadeite jade lacking isomorphism of heavy positive ions.
